PGY-3/NS3: NUMC and NSUH
1.Neurosurgery at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC): This Level I trauma center is located about 15 minutes east of North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish campuses. High-acuity trauma patients, including those from vehicular and workplace accidents, are brought here by the Nassau County Emergency Medical Services. NUMC is one of the main clinical teaching campuses of the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. On this rotation, residents also have the opportunity to assume greater autonomy in patient management, especially for neurotrauma and general neurosurgery.
2.Neurosurgery NSUH: Residents now have a more senior role on the service. They spend more time in the operating room and are able to instruct first year residents and mid-level providers in aspects of neurosurgical care. They gain further experience in stereotactic radiosurgery.
3.Scheduled carotid endarterectomies are coordinated with the Hand Surgery Service. The residents coordinate with the Neurosurgery Chief Resident and the Program Director when he/she participates in those surgeries under the auspices of the Vascular attending and resident surgeons.
4.At NSUH, scheduled peripheral nerve operations are coordinated with the Hand Surgery Service. The residents coordinate with the Neurosurgery Chief Resident and the Program Director when he/she will participate in those surgeries under the auspices of the Hand Surgery attending.
5.Endovascular Surgery is performed at NSUH by Dr. Avi Setton He is an interventional neuroradiologist who is fellowship-trained and has had extensive experience as an attending before joining the North Shore-LIJ Health System. He has a joint appointment in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Radiology. Dr. Setton has trained neurosurgeons in endovascular surgery in numerous well-recognized fellowship programs. At NSUH, residents participate in endovascular neurosurgery one half day a week. He/she learns the basic principles of catheter selection and indications for endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, tumors and stroke. Endovascular treatments are done as part of the Cerebrovascular Surgery program.
