Thank you for your interest in the North Shore-LIJ Health System's Department of Neurosurgery residency program. The goal of our residency program is to meet the demands of a changing health care environment. Our residents have the aptitude and desire to become full-time academic neurosurgeons.
The North Shore-LIJ neurosurgical residency is an academic program located at three hospitals, and with a significant research component. Trainees are exposed to a diverse caseload and an intense and rewarding educational experience. The ongoing development of the Cushing Neuroscience Institute promises continued advancement in training both from the clinical and research standpoints.
Our Department of Neurosurgery has a large full-time faculty representing a wide range of interests and backgrounds. These include state-of-the-art clinical care, as well as translational and basic research programs. We consider the training of academic neurosurgeons a responsibility and our contribution to the vitality and advancement of our discipline.
Residents rotate through three sites during training:
- North Shore University Hospital
- Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York
- Nassau University Medical Center

Applications should be received by the Department of Neurosurgery eight months before the starting date of residency. The program uses the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). A passing score on USMLE Step II (CS and CK) is required for all trainees beginning a NSUH GME program June 2010 and later.
