Three epilepsy programs within the North Shore-LIJ Health System have been recognized as Level 4 Epilepsy Centers by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) – the organization’s highest rating. Level 4 designations were given to the following programs:
- North Shore-LIJ’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY
- The Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY
- The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Level 4 epilepsy centers have the professional expertise and facilities to provide the highest level of medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy.
According to the NAEC guidelines, a Level 4 Epilepsy Center should provide the most complex forms of intensive neuro monitoring, as well as extensive medical, neuropsychological, and psychological treatment. Level 4 centers also offer complete facilities for the evaluation of epilepsy surgery, including intracranial electrodes, and provide a broad range of surgical procedures for epilepsy.
“We are honored that our epilepsy programs have received this prestigious NAEC recognition,” said Raj K. Narayan, MD, senior vice president of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s neuroscience service line. “It is a testament to our health system’s dedicated, multidisciplinary team of specialized epilepsy doctors, nurses, monitoring technologists, pharmacists, and social workers. Over the past few years, we have become one of the largest epilepsy centers in the region and in the country.”
The Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Cohen Children’s provides comprehensive care for children diagnosed with epilepsy and childhood seizures. Cohen specialists are all board-certified pediatric neurologists and neurosurgeons focused on the most effective treatments, offering state-of-the-science epilepsy management and better quality of life for pediatric patients.
“The NAEC’s designation as a Level 4 epilepsy center provides well-deserved recognition of the outstanding care provided by Cohen’s divisions of pediatric neurology and pediatric neurosurgery,” said Andrew Steele, MD, medical director of the children’s hospital.
