Dr. Michael Schulder,  vice chair of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital and director of the Brain Tumor Center at North Shore-LIJ’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), was recently invited to speak as a visiting professor at the University of Thessaly’s School of Health Sciences in Larissa, Greece.  Dr. Schulder’s lectures entitled, “Evolution of Surgical Navigation and Intraoperative Imaging” and “Laser Interstitial Therapy for Brain Tumors” were very well received by over 100 faculty, residents and students in attendance.

An internationally recognized expert in treating brain tumors with lasers via minimally invasive technology, Dr. Schulder has the largest surgical series utilizing a compact, mobile intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) in the United States.

Dr. Schulder is developing tools to ensure that laser fibers can be inserted with the highest accuracy through small incisions to treat patients with brain tumors.  His extensive research in stereotactic radiosurgery focuses on using this technique to treat metastatic tumors, avoiding whole-brain irradiation and subsequent memory loss, as well as defining the ideal dose and treatment schedule for patients with benign brain tumors. “Combined with iMRI, these methods represent state-of-the-art excellence in brain tumor surgery and exemplify the important link between research and surgical applications for better treatment,” Dr. Schulder said.
