North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, has recently performed brain arteriovenous malformation and brain aneurysm surgeries in the hospital’s state-of-the-art hybrid operating room, the health system announced today.
The facility has been used for cardiac, vascular, and gynecologic cases and is now being utilized for difficult neurosurgery cases.
“The hybrid OR uses cutting-edge technology, giving the neurosurgical team the ability to integrate the services of cerebrovascular neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology,” said Amir R. Dehdashti, MD, FACS, NSUH’s director of cerebrovascular neurosurgery research, who recently performed these neurosurgical procedures.
A hybrid OR combines conventional operating room capability with state-of-the-art endovascular imaging, allowing surgeons to use one room for complex cases that could require a combination of procedures from multiple specialists. Performing the procedures in the hybrid room eliminates the need to transfer patients to imaging rooms, increases patient safety, improves clinical results, obviates the need for a potential repeat surgery and consequently decreases the potential complications stemming from multiple procedures.
One of the main features of North Shore’s hybrid OR is an advanced imaging, mobile X-ray technology called the Siemens Artis Zeego system which provides real-time, high quality imaging with potential for three-dimensional reconstructions. The Zeego system is equivalent to an instantaneous computed tomography (CT) scan, which aids physicians in their diagnoses and treatment of cerebrovascular, cardiac, vascular and thoracic disease.
“We recently treated a 50-year-old female patient who had a very large, recurrent brain aneurysm in the center of the brain main vascular tree (Circle of Willis) where aneurysms are commonly located,” said Dr. Dehdashti. “This case was ideal to perform in the hybrid OR room because of the aneurysm’s complexity and previous treatment with endovascular coiling. The patient required an additional procedure to surgically clip the aneurysm, cutting off its blood flow. Surgery was successful in completely obliterating the aneurysm.”
Dr. Dehdashti emphasizes the plans to use the hybrid OR in the setting where the intraoperative angiogram is deemed necessary for surgical treatment of brain vascular disease. Both the neurovascular surgery and interventional neuroradiology team will be involved in this setting.
