Multiple Sclerosis Center

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a lifelong, chronic disease of the central nervous system. It affects mainly young women and is an unpredictable condition that can range from being relatively benign to being totally disabling. Some people with multiple sclerosis may be mildly affected while others may lose their ability to write, speak, or walk. The problem occurs due to multiple areas of inflammation and scarring (sclerosis) in the central nervous system. When this happens, communication between the brain and other parts of the body is disrupted.

The Multiple Sclerosis Center at North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute employs a multidisciplinary clinical staff that focuses on the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with multiple sclerosis. With functional ability and independence as the primary goals of treatment, our clinical services include:

  • psychological counseling
  • neuro-ophthalmology
  • urology
  • psychiatry
  • speech and language pathology
  • neurophysiology
  • biofeedback.

Education and psychosocial support are cornerstones of the Multiple Sclerosis Center that facilitate individuals and their families to continue to make strides in their fight against MS.

The experienced medical, rehabilitation and nursing staff are available to assist patients in different phases of multiple sclerosis treatment and also provide education and support. The Multiple Sclerosis Center is affiliated with the Long Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society which provides a link between clients at the center and community resources.

Each new patient is evaluated at the Multiple Sclerosis Center to determine the most effective approach to treatment. Based on a comprehensive, interdisciplinary model of individualized care, the Multiple Sclerosis Center offers comprehensive neurologic care, while focusing on symptomatic management and the latest in treatments for multiple sclerosis.

The Multiple Sclerosis Center is located at North Shore-LIJ’s Health System's Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Services (S.T.A.R.S.) East Meadow facility.
